Filoli is seeking Seasonal Horticulturists to join our dedicated team and help care for our magnificent gardens and natural lands. This is a unique opportunity to learn and grow alongside a team of highly skilled professionals while preserving a cherished piece of California's history.

This is a seasonal, full-time position (32-40 hours per week) that typically runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The hourly rate is $26.00. Our schedule is flexible to meet the needs of the department, and may include some evenings and weekends.

What You'll Do

As a Seasonal Horticulturist, you'll be essential in maintaining and protecting Filoli's stunning grounds. Your responsibilities will vary based on the specific department you work with, including our Formal Gardens, Production, and Natural Lands teams.

General Duties:

  • Planting & Pruning: Prepare soil, plant a variety of flora (bulbs, annuals, perennials, and woody plants), and meticulously prune trees, shrubs, hedges, and vines.

  • Maintenance: Tend to turf care, inspect and repair irrigation systems, manage pests and weeds, and apply fertilizers.

  • Grooming & Cleanup: Deadhead flowers, groom pots and beds, and keep the grounds immaculate by managing leaves and debris.

  • Equipment Care: Clean, sharpen, and maintain tools and equipment.

  • Visitor Interaction: Engage with Filoli's visitors, sharing information about our historic landscapes and displays.

Specialized Duties (Depending on Assignment):

  • Formal Gardens: Focus on detailed planting plans and structural maintenance, such as installing header boards and cleaning pools and drains.

  • Production: Water containers in our growing area and nursery, propagate plants, and operate equipment like string trimmers and zero-turn mowers.

  • Natural Lands: Maintain hiking trails, safely use handsaws and possibly chainsaws to trim trees and brush, and comfortably work outdoors in all weather conditions, including around poison oak with proper safety gear.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with a passion for horticulture and a strong work ethic. A minimum of six months of practical experience in garden maintenance is required.

Key Qualifications:

  • Education: An Associate's Degree in Horticulture is preferred but not required.

  • Skills: The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, take direction, and safely operate a range of power equipment and vehicles.

  • Physical Ability: You must be able to stand, walk on uneven terrain, and lift, carry, or push up to 50 lbs. You should also be able to perform repetitive motions and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Communication: Excellent communication skills to interact respectfully with staff, volunteers, and visitors.

  • License: A valid driver's license is required.
